BMW’s car of the future

August 10th, 2011 by Chris

BMW is convinced the electric car revolution is coming and last month established the i sub-brand to structure its assault on the falling market.

The i3 is a compact all-electric urban runaround with a 100 mile range, and the i8, a 349bhp four-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid sports car capable of 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and fuel economy of 104mpg.

Both of cars featured in the ad are expected in 2013 and should be sufficient to enthrall anyone with even a passing interest in electric cars.

Brabus- The worlds fastest 4 seater convertible.

July 12th, 2011 by Chris

The Brabus carbriolet

Tuning company Brabus has revealed a V12-engined, 788bhp version of the Mercedes E-Class cabriolet, creating the fastest four-seater cabriolet in the world and more importantly a family convertible that doesn’t make you look like a big girls blouse!

According to the company, the Brabus E V12 Cabriolet should be capable of a incredible 231mph, and a 0-62mph time of just 3.7seconds. Keep your foot down and it should make it to 124mph in 9.9seconds.

This comes from an engine that is a reworking of the V12 from the Mercedes S600 that has had its capacity increased from 5.5-litres to 6.3. Brabus has also enlarged the twin turbochargers, uses a high-performance stainless-steel four-exit exhaust and redesigned the air-intakes.

Other changes over the normally sedate E-Class cabriolet include the addition of a high-performance limited-slip differential, a front apron that is designed to both reduce lift on the front axle, a modified body to allow a set of ultra-wide 19-inch wheels to squeeze under and an adjustable suspension setup that can be raised and lowered by up to 35mm.

This amount of crafting and power doesn’t come cheap though, you’re looking at a staggering £421,000 for a standard model….yikes!

UK’s first hydrogen filling station to open in Swindon

July 7th, 2011 by Chris

The Honda Clarity

The UK will see its first hydrogen fuelling station at Honda’s South Marston plant in September.

The station is being seen as an important step in a UK-wide scheme to make hydrogen vehicles a viable alternative to petrol-driven cars.

Currently there is only one commercial hydrogen car on the market and that is the Honda FXC Clarity.

Swindon Borough Council’s regeneration body, Forward Swindon, was awarded a £250,000 grant from the South West England Regional Development Agency in order to build the fuel station at Honda in Swindon.

Forward Swindon Chief Executive Ian Piper told BBC news: “It’s absolutely ground-breaking stuff. It is the first one in the UK and we think it’s great that Swindon is at the forefront of this.

“The automative and car-making sector is very important to Swindon, and it’s important for Swindon to be at the leading edge in this way.”

Although this will be a right step into helping the environment through low cost emissions, is it an unnecessary cost of tax payers money? There is afterall only one Hydrogen car manufactured commercially worldwide and the costs to make the hydrogen viable for fuel consumption, will equal the current price of petrol. So it it really worth the hassle?

Attention All Motorists! Pay Attention or Pay Up

May 12th, 2011 by Chris

We’ve all been there happily traveling along and then some idiot decides they need to in your lane or taking the exit and just cut you up. Well up until now you may have just said a few curse words and had a bit of a rant to your fellow passenger about how some people are a menace and shouldn’t be on the road. In some cases this is probably true however if we’re honest the majority of us have probably lost our concentration and accidentally got ourselves into the wrong lane or cut someone up at a roundabout at some point.
